Copperhill Mountain Lodge has a modern lodge style setting, created by world-reknown architect Peter Bohlin. The hotel was opened by two Dutch investors in December 2008, and since September 2009 the hotel is run by Nordic Choice Hotels which is owned and run by Norwegian Petter A Stordalen. Copperhill Mountain Lodge is also a member of Design Hotels™. HOW COPPERHILL GOT ITS NAME

Åreskutan rests in a trough of copper ore. The first copper finds were made in the middle of the 18th century; mining soon began and was to continue over three centuries. In the Fröå area, on Åreskutan’s eastern slopes, a mining village with almost 200 inhabitants grew and flourished. Gustafsgruvan was the first mine, followed by Drottninggruvan and Carlsgruvan. The last mining period was 1909–1919 and was run by a newly-formed mining company in collaboration with American backers, the Duluth-Huså Copper Mines Company. One can still hear the whispers of history, and places of cultural and historical interest bear witness to an era of gleaming copper, riches and hard work. Förberget was a part of the Fröå area that was rich in copper finds. Contemporary visitors are overwhelmed by the scenery and the spectacular views – wealth is no longer found in copper, but in the chance of an exclusive way of life.

FROM HEALTH RESORT TO WINTER SPORT The mountain air has attracted visitors to Åre since the end of the 19th century. At that time the village was primarily a health resort that also attracted hunting and fishing guests. Eventually, hotels were built and the first lift was opened in 1910. The downhill race, “Årebragden”, was held for the first time in 1921, but it was another ten years until alpine skiing was regarded as a leisure activity, after some enthusiasts visited the Alps and imported the concept to Sweden. Today, Åre is famous as a world-class ski resort with an extensive slope system and a wide range of entertainment. However, it has also preserved its authentic charm which, along with its mountain location, gives the village an atmosphere that few other places possess. The beautiful mountains, a rich cultural history and a great variety of activities and events, winter and summer, make Åre a living village – all year round.
